Fertilizer lecture outlines farm soil drain and tomato gains
A small crowd gathered at the courthouse on Saturday for a lecture by Professors Patterson and Robinson of the Maryland Agricultural College on fertilizers and soil improvement. Patterson argued the annual soil drain across the state totals millions, urged use of barnyard manure, legumes, and specific tomato fertilization formulas, and explained lime and fertilizer analysis questions. Robinson focused on tomato cultivation, recommending hot beds in March, wide plant spacing, and nitrate of soda applications, concluding tomatoes can surpass cereals in profitability when shipped early.
