The passage recalls a brief married life marked by constant job loss and frayed finances. A wife endures hopes of new gowns dashed as the husband hops from one venture to another. The hostess inquires if he wants anything while he talks to the fish. He explains he only asks the haddock if it can grieve news of the captain.

A weary group arrives in a small European town and spots a house bearing a curious sign. They enter and demand oysters, but a courteous host explains the sign. Eve asks about fat, another guest misreads it, and the host clarifies that the sign refers to an ear, not an oyster bung.
