First Locomotive Trial in America on Lackawanna Road
On August 8 1829 the Stourbridge Lion became the first American locomotive to run on a railroad in Honesdale Pa linking Lackawanna coal fields with tidewater. The primitive track weighed seven tons, faced a high trestle, and sparked a cannon salute where Alva Adams lost an arm. the engine later decayed while the line remained economically vital through the canal and mine network.
