Miss Delmarva VII will be chosen on Monday June 21 at 2 45 p m at the east entrance of Georgetown High School. Ten entrants from each of the Delmarva states were selected from about 185 contestants in elimination contests.
Charles Theis a 25 year old polio victim from Salisbury hopes for hospital treatment to regain use of his hands and possibly wheel himself. Theis a former saxophonist and insurance man lives on a rocking bed with an iron lung nearby. The Wicomico County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis is seeking the right hospital. Family and friends support him while income ceased after illness. Salisbury Local 44 Musicians union held a benefit dance raising nearly 450 dollars with six bands performing.
Radio commentator Fulton Lewis Jr won a directed verdict of acquittal Monday in Howard County Circuit Court after a key witness refused to testify on self incrimination grounds. Prosecutors failed to elicit from Sheridan Fahnestock, publisher of the St Marys Enterprise, details about a letter Lewis allegedly wrote. Indictments were returned February 25 by a St Marys County grand jury investigating comments on enforcement of gambling and liquor laws in the county where Lewis resides.
The annual girls camp at Camp Mardela near Denton begins Monday with counselors arriving Sunday afternoon. Guest and program staff include Miss Barbara Hager of Denton and Heike Feilitz of Germany, with A Jerome Fletcher leading nature studies. Activities start after registration with tribes forming, then swimming, recreation, stories, and a 3:30 tribe meeting, followed by vesper services and a masquerade party.
Miss Gertrude Gronbech will assume duties as Caroline County Home Demonstration Agent effective July 1. Dr. James M. Gwin announces the Maryland Extension Service appointment to succeed Miss Bessie Spafford, who retires June 30 after 30 years. Gronbech will lead Homemakers and 4 H Club Extension programs in the county. She hails from Jewell Iowa and holds BS degrees from Iowa State College in consumer economics and home economics education.
The 8th Laymen's Conference of the Episcopal Diocese of Easton will be held at Camp Wright, Kent Island, on Saturday June 26 and Sunday June 27. Registration begins at 1 p.m. June 26 with the conference opening at 2 p.m. Speakers include Bishop Allen J. Miller of Easton and clergymen Charlies Edward Berger, Christoph Keller, Hugh W. Clary, and Colonel Carl O. Hoffman of Chestertown, who chairs laymen's work in the Third Province.
Mr. and Mrs. G. Emory Gottwals marked their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary with an open house at their Denton home on Sunday afternoon June 13. The couple greeted guests and shared memories of their years together.
E. C. Myers of the Maryland State Police Easton Barracks at Denton was promoted to Trooper First Class effective June 16. Myers has served with the state police since April 1949. A Dundalk native, he served in the U. S. Navy in World War II. Promotion announced with about 40 others by Col. Elmer F. Munshower.
Evelyn Lee a 43 year old colored woman from Denton is held in Caroline County Jail for the pistol slaying of Emmanuel Walters also 43 of Denton. Walters was killed last Thursday morning at Maple Lane Farm four miles west of Denton in an argument. He was pronounced dead at the scene by county medical examiner Dr. D O George.
An estimated 250 dollars in damage arose from a rear end collision on Route 313 a mile north of Greensboro Sunday night. Jerry Zlock of Henderson was charged with reckless driving by Cpl. Gus Koste after ramming the left front of his car into the right rear of Hubert A. Wilkerson’s vehicle, a colored resident of Sadlersville.
The sixty second annual Maryland State Firemen's Association convenes in Ocean City from June 23 to 25. President William A. Chenowith presides with John W. Smith Ted C. Gardner William A. Wilson Floyd B. Heimer and Chaplain James W. Minter guiding sessions and memorial services as delegates from across Maryland attend lectures demonstrations and rescue tactic showcases at the beach resort.
Three Denton girls are selected to represent Caroline County at Girls State in Annapolis from June 21 to 26. Sandra Stafford is sponsored by Denton Rotary Club, Peggy Van Dyke by Denton Community Club and the American Legion Auxiliary, and Lois Fuchs by Denton Lions Club. They will stay at Carvel Hall and study citizenship at the State House, passing laws and electing a governor. The governor and senate president will attend Girls Nation in Washington in August. Four Caroline County boys will attend Boys State at St Johns College, Annapolis, June 21 to 26. Charles Downs and Francis Schwartz from Denton and Ridgely, with sponsors from Rotary and American Legion posts, plus William D. Kreuger and William C. Murphy sponsored by local Lions Clubs.
Civil Defense Director Edward Sparks reports Caroline County conducted an air raid alert on Monday June 14 at 8 pm with swift siren response and rapid town coordination. Firemen reported to stations, police and guards controlled traffic, and neighboring towns praised the drill improving public readiness for a national disaster.
The Peninsula Girl Scout Council Camp at Claiborne known as Camp Claiborne nears readiness for campers with tents to be raised on Sunday June 20. Camp Director Miss Tiione Schadt announced staff including unit leader Miss Thelma Nickerson and food supervisors Mrs. P W Dennis and Mrs. John R Marshall with assistant counselors Patsy Ford among others. Lunch will be served.
District Director L A Chamberlain warns employers and students that earnings over 600 during summer require tax returns. He notes current law taxes all such income and that only dependents under 600 may be claimed. No change enacted yet. publicity will follow if law shifts.
A tea was hosted at the home of Mrs. Calvert C. Merriken on Tuesday afternoon from 3 to 5 oclock to honor the First Methodist Church Youth Choir. Directress Mrs. G H Rue and teacher Mrs. O F Smith presented gifts to graduating girls Patsy Towers and Betty Jo Orme for six years of service and Ellen Carter Nichols for four years.refreshment committee members Mrs. K T Everngain and Mrs. T Carville Fleetwood assisted. corsages were made by Mrs. Jay Smith and Mrs. James E Harris. The choir was praised for its loyalty to church services during the year.
A new emergency regulation to eradicate brucellosis in cattle was announced in Maryland by Dr. A L Brueckner director of the Live Stock Sanitary Service, a branch of the State Board of Agriculture based at the University of Maryland. The disease causes calf losses and reduced milk in herds and can affect humans as undulant fever.
The Denton Youth Association will hold a carnival the week of June 21 through 26 at Schaub Park. Proceeds will fund sports equipment for local youth.
Maryland won first place in Group I of the Fifteenth National Pedestrian Protection Contest by the American Automobile Association. Hagerstown tied for third in its 25,000–50,000 population group. Major Ridgely received a leadership citation. Maryland’s 1953 pedestrian fatalities fell to 153, with a death rate of 6.5 per 100,000, slightly above the group average.
Farmers who did not plant any wheat for grain during 1952 1953 and 1954 may apply for a 1955 wheat acreage allotment. County ASC chair J Boone Jarrell notes eligibility rules and requires written applications by June 30 1954. Blank forms are available at the county ASC office.

The Caroline County Business and Professional Women's Club held its annual picnic on Wednesday June 9 at 6 30 p m on the lawn of Mr and Mrs H Earle Smith in Denton. After supper a surprise wedding shower was given for the hosts who had recently married.
Secretary Ezra Taft Benson will appear on the Maryland Poultry Day program at the University of Maryland on September 15. Extension Poultryman Perry F Twining, general chairman, says Benson will speak at the evening banquet and that the event caps an all day program regarded as highly significant for the national poultry industry.
