Strawberries Shipped On Ice Boosts Saturday Sales
An old practice of shipping berries to New York on Saturdays yielded poor prices. Ridgely merchant T L Day tested refrigeration, sending a car to New York last Sunday. The refrigerated shipments sold 6 to 15 cents per quart, far higher than open-car sales, netting several hundred dollars more. Fruit shippers plan to keep using the ice car, with additional refrigerators for Saturday shipments expected to operate from Ridgely and elsewhere.
