Elf-loving clubwoman recalls temperance fire tale
A local clubwoman tells a joke tale about a distillery fire in a small town she once taught in. She recalls barrels of whisky being rolled into a river to save stock, prompting a crowd to disperse before discovering the town’s all-day drunkenness, except her upstream community. The anecdote is recounted with humor and a twist of local memory.

Duty and diligence in every life and work
A reflective piece urged to perform daily duties faithfully whether in town or village, stressing steady effort, small deeds, and mutual aid. A Welsh minister's parable about the devil chained to illustrate universal reach, ending with a rival voice noting the chain’s looseness.
When Three Southern Politicians Tip Confusion on Train
A trio of southern politicians Legendre Semmes and Ben Hill dined in a railway restaurant. Semmes and Nifit paid a dollar while Legendre spent seventy five cents. Each left a silver dollar tip. Legendre later added a quarter to the tray. Semmes misread the tip as change and kept it. Legendre added another quarter to soothe him. Hill also misdirected the tip, and the party hurried to catch their train.

Ingersoll Visit and Royal Jests at Dinner
A packed miscellany recalls John W. Mackay inviting Robert G. Ingersoll to visit the Comstock mines, where the guest gasped at furnace heat and quipped about hades. Eddystone Lighthouse’s Changing Towers and Trials
The Eddystone rocks formed a dangerous reef off Plymouth where the first lighthouse was built in 1695 by Henry Winstanley and washed away in a storm with the builder among the drowned. Subsequent towers by Rudyerd and Smeaton rose, but the 1759 masonry design proved faulty. A new 1882 lighthouse by James Douglass replaced the old flanked by fog bells and later an explosive gun cotton fog signal. The present structure’s solid vertical base withstands battering seas, unlike earlier towers whose curved facade allowed waves to surge onto the lantern gallery.
