War department figures show that since the United States entered the war through January 11, 1919, 67,915 animals were shipped overseas, including 5,489 cavalry horses, 30,603 draft horses, 28,088 draft mules, and 975 pack animals. Only about 600 horses and mules have been reported lost at sea, under 7 percent of total shipments.
