Tragic Chimney Rescue Ends in Death at Sheffield Pawnshop
Robert Albert Johnson, aged nineteen, died after being trapped inside a chimney while attempting to enter the pawn brokers shop owned by Mr. J. K. Fieldsend in Sheffield Park. Three failed break-in attempts led him to descend twenty feet, get lost at a split chimney, and remain trapped for seven hours as kitchen and bakehouse fires burned beneath him. He was only found when groans were heard, and despite freeing him, he died just as escape was completed. The body showed extensive swelling and the mouth was full of boot.
