An American Agriculturist correspondent describes a soil rich melon setup using layered soil and manure in hills twelve feet apart, sowing thickly then thinning to one plant per hill for large, long bearing vines. Also notes successful hay cap tests and a method for sowing oats and peas for mixed feed, advising barley for late sowing.
A summary by L L Van Slyke reports 1895 trials using 1000 and 2000 pounds per acre of fertilizer on potatoes, with 1896 crop without fertilizer. Yields rose 88 and 18.5 bushels per acre over two years for 1000 and 2000 pounds respectively, with higher marketable percentage. Net incomes favored 1000 pounds, while 2000 pounds left excess nutrients and reduced gains.
