Wheeler Opposes Peach Freight Rate Rise in River Trade
Capt. C. Wheeler of Wheeler Transportation Line visited Denton to discuss steamboat rates for peaches. He notes last year’s eight cent per crate price triggered a price war with rivals, drove losses, and says this season rates will rise to eight cents per basket and ten cents per box. He argues river transport remains cheaper than rail, despite higher freight costs. Farmers, he believes, will study the issue and face no strong opposition.
