Old Colonial Fort Frederick Study and History

Old Colonial Fort Frederick, erected under Gov Hora tio Sharpe, was funded by a £11,000 grant on May 16, 1766 and named for the sixth Lord Baltimore. Located on a knoll above the Potomac, 17 miles west of Hagerstown, it measured 240 by 100 feet and housed British prisoners on December 26, 177? from Burgoyne’s army. Sold September 6, 1701, repurchased after 181 years, then used by U S troops in the Civil War. long regarded as a premier fort of the era.
