Maryland apple crop outlook for coming season
Maryland faces a favorable fruit year with about 71 000 more barrels of apples and 87 000 more bushels of peaches expected than last year. The July 15 forecast by S B Shaw of the Maryland State Horticultural Society notes an estimated 397 000 barrels of apples, large crops of York Imperial and Ben Davis reported, and fruit generally disease free and growing well. Prices rise to 3 25 per hamper in some areas as shipments to New York Baltimore Philadelphia and Wilmington continue ahead. A banner apple crop is anticipated on the Peninsula but heavy fall storms could ruin much of the harvest if farmers cannot handle the load.
