Remarkable Crabs Carry Oysters and Sponge. New York Star

The New York Star notes crabs rarely shed shells after reaching full size, becoming host to barnacles and marine growths. A British Museum exhibit shows an edible crab bearing about six large oysters on its back, doomed to carry them for life. Also displayed is a hairy crab with a sponge as big as a man’s fist.

The Religio Philosophical Journal describes a magnet based cure for hysteria. A hysterical patient and a second person are placed in trance near a magnet, with the operator guiding the transfer. Over repeated sessions the hysterical symptoms fade until disappearance.

A Youth's Companion note explains local belief that white sailors are seen at the sea’s bottom then approach as ships appear, a distortion from unfamiliar observers. It records how observers claim ships emerge mast first, then sails, then hull, and reverse when departing, implying Europeans come from the sea bottom.

France's crimials shipped to New Caledonia backfires

Three or four years ago France ordered criminals with two imprison terms to be sent to New Caledonia. About 5000 of the worst offenders were to be dumped each year, but the plan collapsed. Noumea became a pandemonium as the dumped criminals caused chaos. The French now consider dumping them elsewhere, anywhere in the world, except San Francisco.

Napoleon's Traveling Wagon in Canty near Silesia

One of the oldest wagons remains at Canty near Silesia identified as Napoleon's traveling wagon captured after Waterloo by Field Marshal Blucher at the head of Prussia. Napoleon left his hat sword and valuables in the wagon which remains well preserved.

Ingenious Straw Paper Promises Safer Mail Orders

A New York Tribune report describes a perfume shop using specially prepared straw paper with a corrugated inner surface to wrap toilet articles. The brown paper cushions glassware, making shipments safer by mail or messenger. The inventor’s method is praised as a notable American convenience and reportedly profitable.
