Pepper The King of Spices From East To Tropics

Pepper, the commonest and most used spice, originated in the East Indies and now grows across the tropical Americas. It is a climbing plant with a smooth stem, up to twelve feet long, bearing bright red ripe fruit. Propagated by cuttings, pepper yields two crops yearly for about twelve years after a three to four year growth period. The berries are harvested as soon as they redden, dried, rubbed, and winnowed for market. Pepper was known to the ancients and was a costly medieval royal gift.
