National Democratic clubs form new Baltimore association

The National League of Democratic clubs met in Baltimore to organize the National Association of Democratic Clubs with delegates from across the United States. W. E. Russell of Massachusetts became permanent chairman and Chauncey F. Black was elected president. Maryland officers were named. The Boston Herald Independent urged tariff reform and clear campaign messaging.

Does Our One Sided Tariff System Protect Labor

A dated argument argues wages are set by supply and demand, not tariffs. It compares American high tariff wages with England’s free trade gains, cites census data on Massachusetts and Ohio, iron mining, cotton and woolen goods, and notes protected industries pay lower wages than unprotected ones. It condemns tariff advocates for misleading labor claims and calls for free raw materials.

Labor and free ships defend American industry

In a voice denouncing protectionists, the writer argues for labor freedom over tariffs and slavery, claiming American labor is the wealth creator and should produce at home. He envisions expanding woolen production, ending raw cotton exports, and lifting the nation to industrial and maritime prominence. The piece ends with a call to reject protectionism and embrace free trade for labor.
