President Garfield Shot at Baltimore Depot
Washington July 2 the President was shot at 9 28 AM by Charles Guiteau as he entered the Baltimore and Potomac depot with Secretary Blaine. A second shot struck in the groin as he was carried to a railway car and then to the White House. Doctors attended. Guiteau is in custody and claims Arthur is now President. The incident, witnessed by fifty to sixty ladies, shocks the nation and prompts questions of insanity or plot.
