How He Differs from Us Predecessor as in Quarter Century Ago

The modern passenger brakeman is a new creation not an evolution. He is admired, unlike twenty five years ago when he was a rough, collarless figure who shouted stations and assisted ladies with high steps. The old brakeman wore a peaked cap, coarse hands, and a predilection for tobacco. He was a carnival of gyrations around the brake wheel and a symbol of old railroading charm. He helped people alight and showed disdain for baskets, yet carried a public aura of wonder. Today’s brakeman is courteous, refined, and a model of contemporary railroad service in a smart uniform.

Entertaining Maharajah Audience in Benares

A venerable maharajah hosts guests in a sparsely furnished palace room. A crimson dyed royal pigeon, musicians, and two dancing girls accompany a ceremonial elephant ride as guests receive ornate ringlets before departing. Additional notes mention an Egyptian papyrus and a comical rat fright tale from Americus, Georgia.

Gladstone's Elder Father Sir Thomas Gladstone

London World notes Sir Thomas Gladstone of Kincardineshire was a devout Tory famed for consistency and cordial but distant relations with his brother. He served 1830 to 1837 in Parliament, managed large estates, and impressed tenants with his interest in agriculture while contrasting with evangelical church views.

Portrait memory and cobra legend from colonial India

A New York Star account recalls a sketch of Juliet by an artist inspired by Miss Neilson and her dressing room autograph, tying memories to her Paris death. The Philadelphia Times reprints a tale of a Madras Railway worker attacked by a vengeful cobra after killing its mate, leading to a fatal bite and decline.

Birds and guns in a restless paper collage

A chaotic mix of anecdotes from Chicago to New York via a Herald column. A street reporter recalls a singing canary interrupting a charity fundraiser, while a note on Stanley’s Maxim gun travels from Africa to British control. Slug Gauge For Door Hinge Alignment From 19th Century

A vintage note describes using a gauged lath with marked top and bottom edges to punch sharp brads, creating a slug to hang doors of the same size. Place against the door edge, align with the top, drive nails at marks for hinge positions, and reuse for blinds or shutters.
