Eleventh Festival hailed as best organized yet in Delmarva region

A Delmarva Chicken Festival committeewoman praised the eleventh festival for best organization and ground layout as Denton hosted the event. Letters of thanks to John W. Asher Jr. and John Hargreaves, signed by local officials and festival organizers, highlighted the community pride and success. Junior Miss Delmarva crowned in Denton with Sarah E. Phillips winning. runners up and prize details noted among Delaware and Berlin participants. Masters of Ceremonies included Chuck Maillet from WJWL.

Caroline Schools Offer Summer Band Instruction

Mr. Earl Roberts leads six summer band classes in Caroline Federalsburg and Greensboro schools for beginners and advanced students with a $2.50 tuition. Sessions run June 23 to August 12 on Wednesdays Thursdays and Tuesdays with times for each location listed. Students may enroll if they missed initial meetings.

Miss Georgetown Crowned Miss Delmarva XI at Denton

On opening day of the 11th Delmarva Chicken Festival a torrential downpour and wind gusts toppled a 200 foot tent in which about 300 people stood. No injuries reported though exhibits were damaged. Helen Lee Pittard, 16, Miss Georgetown, won the pageant over 11 rivals from Peninsula towns and plans to attend the University of Delaware.

Summer Story Hour Opens At Club House July 9

All children ages four to nine are invited to the Woman's Club House on Wednesday morning July 9 at 10 o'clock for a weekly summer story hour. The program runs each Wednesday through August 20 under the direction of Mrs. Oron Smith, with children split into two age groups.

Chicken Festival Parade Draws 15 000 People in Denton

More than 15 000 spectators lined Denton streets for the 11th Annual Delmarva Chicken Festival parade, a mile and a half long that capped three days of events. Judges and contestants in the National Chicken Cooking Contest watched as nearly 20 marching bands and about as many fire companies accompanied 16 floats. Winners across multiple categories were announced with cash prizes from $10 to $100 and trophies, honoring 4-H clubs, bands, fire departments, and civic groups.

Denton Town Tax Rate Raised to $1.00 on July 1

Denton voters are told the town tax rate increases to 1.00 per 100 dollars of value starting July 1 due to higher service and labor costs. The statement notes tax hikes are unpopular but argues for better services after a recent Chicken Festival highlighted a cleaner, efficient town image.

Greensboro Trio Wins First Prize In Chicken Festival Talent Show

A Greens boro trio of singers won first prize at the 11th annual Delmarva Chicken Festival talent show in the Denton Armory Friday night. Sonja Biffle Emily Robb and Betty Ellen Dean performed with Patsy Edwards on piano for $100 cash and an ice chest.

Mrs. Wolf Receives Cancer Crusade Plaque in Caroline County

Caroline County chairwoman Mrs. William F. Wolf received an engraved plaque on June 27 from Howard M. Smith and other officials for leading the 1958 Cancer Crusade. The drive raised 3647.90 with 276 volunteers assisting. additional memorials added. Also noted: Social Security official Mr. Robert F. O'Regan will hold a session at the Denton Fire House on July 7 at 10 a.m.

New York Housewife Wins National Chicken Cooking Championship

Barbara Marks of Wantagh Long Island, a first time entrant, won the National Chicken Cooking Champion title from 186 entries across 17 states and two foreign countries. She received $500 cash and a kitchen range worth $500, with the crown presented by Senator J. Glenn Beall and a silver tray from Lloyd Geil.

Woman found murdered near Delaware line in Caroline woods

The half clothed body of 19 year old Ruth Ellen Cannon, a three month bride from Burrsville, was found in Stave Mill Woods near Route 404 south of the Delaware border. Police charged nearby resident Clayton Breeding with kidnapping and murder after his car upholstery was washed and a tip led to the scene. The medical examiner said death was by strangulation. Breeding's wife and others associated with him are questioned as investigators search the woods, with the FBI and a helicopter aiding the manhunt.

Denton Graduates Among Goldey Beacom Class of 198 Students

Four graduates from the Denton area joined 198 graduates at Goldey Beacom School of Business Wilmington exercises held Friday June 27. Named are Virginia Ellen Bishop Emily Rebecca Longfellow James Allen Mandrell and Connie Monroe. Twenty five veterans attended under the Korean Educational Bill with principal speaker Charles H Doerger president of Electric Hose and Rubber Company Wilmington.
