Youthful Winner of Broiler Contest Uses Infrared Lamps

Donald C. Davis an 8th grader from Powellville Maryland won first place in the junior broiler production contest sponsored by the Maryland Poultry Council. In a field of 40 Hagstern Shore participants his dressed broilers ranked top. He used an infrared 4 lamp unit from Eastern Shore Public Service to brood chicks, two lamps auto controlled by temperature, and keeping the flock warmer led to higher weights. His chicks sold at 11 weeks for a 28 cent profit per bird and averaged 14 pounds more than the family’s stove brooded stock.
