Henry W. Harris references a Boston Globe piece about Christmas day combat on the road to Trenton. The poem recalls frozen troops, muskets, cannons, and a mythic continuity of struggle across a harsh winter landscape with Loyalist and revolutionary tensions echoed in the scene.

In 1742 a small iron works named Mount Joy Forge was built on a creek feeding the Schuylkill river about nineteen miles northwest of Philadelphia. The forge gave the creek and the camp their name Valley Forge. Washington and his army wintered there in 1778 79 and today Valley Forge Dow a state park.
