In a Brent Hill parish tale Susy, an orphaned teacher at Brent Hill, shelters a crippled village idiot Joe and defends him from abuse at Farmer Collingwood’s. Her care inspires Joe’s lifelong loyalty to Susy’s love interest Cyrus Portman, a Boston-raised clergyman, whose wealth and virtue attract her. When two drunken robbers ambush Cyrus, Joe sacrifices himself, saving the parson but dying from his injuries, uttering Susy’s name as his last word.
An 1840 Indiana tale explains why the rooster became a Democratic emblem. After a disputed vote, editor Chapman boasted with crowing. a rival taunted We Crow after late returns favored the Whigs. The rooster symbol stuck as Democratic success imagery.
