Jamesy and His First Day in School
A four room West Side family story centers on Jamesy a nearly seven year old boy from a hardworking family. After years on the sidewalk learning to fight his own battles he starts school and surprises his teacher by quickly catching the idea of reading aloud and repeating stories from a primer. The piece contrasts his rough upbringing with a hopeful schooling moment and includes a brief anecdote about an English governess and a light political barb about a new woman in politics.
