Porch Light On For The Polio Marchers

James Owen Knotts named chairman of the 1958 Denton March of Dimes drive conducted by the Caro line County group. The two fold effort runs door to door January 28 from 7 to 9 PM and voluntary canister collections in town businesses. Residents are urged to leave outside lights on to identify solicitors and support the polio cause tied to the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis originated by Franklin D Roosevelt. Post 29 American Legion contributed $50 to launch the local fund, praised as community service by Knotts.

Caroline Education Board President Resigns

Board members and employees of Choptank Electric Cooperative held a turkey dinner at the Denton fire hall for about 140 people, recognizing length of service by 25 employees. The event honored service years from five to fifteen and featured remarks by President Olin S. Davis and magician James Snow, followed by dancing.

Mrs. Margaret Carroll Celebrates 100th Birthday

Mrs. Margaret Carroll, born January 29, 1858 in New Castle Delaware, marks her centennial next Wednesday. She lived in Denton for 60 years, married Joseph H. Carroll, County Treasurer and Register of Wills, and later moved to Philadelphia. She appears on Arthur Godfrey and It Could Be You TV programs.

Ten Commandments At Dentonia At Dentonia Theatre

The Ten Commandments by Cecil B. DeMille arrives at the Dentonia Theatre January 29 and runs through February 8 with one 7 30 p m show nightly. Location shots in Egypt feature Charlton Heston and a Technicolor VistaVision production. Admission is 1 25 for adults 50c for children and 90c for colored balcony.

County Teachers to Hold February Workshop in Denton

Caroline County teachers will meet for a two day workshop at Caroline High School in Denton on February 6 and 7. The aim is to revise the county curriculum amid a new building program and changing times. Fred G. Asilton chairs the Curriculum Steering Committee guiding ten discussion groups with three keynote speakers and panels from students and parents.

Methodist Ministers At Buck Hill Falls Retreat

Rev. George W. Goodley and Rev. Thomas J. Turkington were among more than 100 Methodist ministers from the Peninsula Conference at the Washington Area Methodist Ministers Retreat held at Buck Hill Falls Pennsylvania early this week. Over 400 ministers from three area conferences registered. National Safety Good Turn Kick Off February Event

Fifteen Choptank District scouting units have signed up for the National Safety Good Turn Kick-off on February 8 in Rodney Square Wilmington Delaware. The event opens at 2 p m with a parade featuring three Armed Service bands and dignitaries from three states. Thousands of Cubs Scouts Explorers and Scouters with safety groups fire trucks police and industry representatives are expected. The program rotates safety themes through the year with traffic safety in spring and outdoor and home safety in other seasons. James K. Cooper of Denton was appointed by Gov. McKeldin to the Caroline County School Board, filling the unexpired term of Elias W. Nuttle. The swearing in occurred at the Court House on Monday. Cooper, a married father of three, and in business with his father in Denton, brings local ties to the post.

United Fund Organized In Caroline County 1958

A United Fund of Caroline County was formed last Tuesday at the County Court House in Denton. Temporary chair Edwin Unger opened the meeting, H R Hughes read Articles of Incorporation, and the articles were unanimously adopted after State Tax Commission approval. Twenty four directors were elected with eight chosen to serve staggered terms. Officers named: W Edwin Unger president, H R Hughes vice president, W Clark Quillen treasurer, Mrs Herbert Horton secretary. The budget committee will seek member organizations to join and plan this fall’s drive.

Caroline Bar Association Elects Officers For 1958

The Caroline County Bar Association met in the County Court House and elected 1958 officers. President Marvin Smith of Federalsburg, vice-president Robert W. Downes Jr., treasurer James Owen Knotts, and secretary Harry R. Hughes were chosen unanimously. The outgoing president W A Stewart Wright presided. No further actions were taken before adjournment.

Caroline County Bank stockholders and directors met in Greensboro fire house last Tuesday with Arthur W. Brumbaugh presiding. A luncheon by the Fire Co. Auxiliary under Miss Mildred Ginn preceded the business session. Brumbaugh reported 1957 results and noted bank modernization as a highlight.
