Scholarship Swap Averting Loss Becomes County Hero Tale
In a county setting Joe Weston and his father Mr Weston face the chance that a less privileged boy would miss a scholarship. Henry and the boy’s family negotiate a cash transfer to secure the prize for the rightful recipient. The Weston family celebrates a just outcome and considers the boy’s future in farming rather than a distant college path. Joe accepts the deed with gratitude, acknowledging the broader impact on his community. The anecdote closes with gratitude, resolve, and a vow to keep quiet about the arrangement.

A collage of wartime humor and social commentary questions why cooks desert the Marine Corps, noting higher desertion rates among cooks over two years. It cites statistics from vault-like sources and mocks service life with anecdotes about employment agents, a widow cook, and jokes on bait and freedom. The piece frames cooks as a stubborn, celebrated group within an era of service.

Curious tale of bluffing age and a birthday razor
A humorous vignette from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch recounts a mother teaching her son to claim an age, a rector’s quip about a birthday gift, and a moral about old Father Time. It then shifts to De Parville on rats storing 250 tulip bulbs in an underground chamber ungnawed, arranged neatly in two rows.
