Rural Free Delivery Growth and Post Office History

J L Bristow urges 6 cent per pound rate cap for rural mail and notes 28 078 free delivery routes with potential to add 2000 more. Progressive farmers built roads by self tax in Canandaigua

Residents in Canandaigua New York built stone roads with own funds before state aid laws. Farmers scraped together money to buy rock crushers and hire engines to crush and haul stone. They taxed themselves to extend roads, earning daily income from better market access. Now state pays substantial shares of road costs, easing local burdens.

Oil Roads Bring Dust-Free California Highways

California roadmakers have advanced from dust-laying oil to permanent roads using oil asphalt and granite. Oiled roads cost about 1.34 cents per square foot, asphalt 15 cents, and powdered granite nearly double the oil. Rubber tires are not harmed, surfaces don’t soften, and roads resist wear. About 1,000 miles of oil roads exist in California, offering a dust-free, visually similar alternative to asphalt with advantages.
