Rome Jan 7 Pope Benedict announces that Germany and Austria have accepted his proposal to exchange incapacitated prisoners of war. The pontiff views the move as progress toward alleviating some suffering from the war and a partial relief of the war’s waste.
Petrograd Jan 7 Russians pursue remnants of the Turkish army in Trans Caucasia after a crushing victory. They report 35 000 prisoners and capture of arms. the Ninth and Tenth Turkish corps are destroyed or shattered. Grand Duke Nicholas says the victory is complete and praises the troops. Elsewhere German forces renew activity in north Poland aiming to cross the Vistula. Hindenburg shifts five corps to bolster a northern attack while Russian forces entrench and counter.
London reports a Russian victory over Austrians in the Uzok Pass with Emperor Francis Joseph's army retreating amid a snowstorm while Russian cavalry attack. Watson issued checks when his bank account was short, using securities bought in Scranton as collateral to cover the notes.
In Harrisburg Pennsylvania on January 7 John Walker aged nineteen was killed and Clauda Williams aged twenty nine seriously injured when sleds coasted down steep hills near Cartiste, left the road, and crashed through fences.
Washington reports Black smallpox has broken out in Vera Cruz and the tropical city is amid an epidemic. American consul W. W. Canada notified the State Department of the outbreak as carloads of casualties from the Puebla battle were brought in.
General markets show flour quiet at 5.25 to 5.50 per barrel for winter pleate and 6 for fancy forms. Wheat gains noted with No 2 red at 1.341 to 1.36, No 2 yellow 77 cents, No 2 white 56 cents.
