Remarkable Year for Baltimore Canned Goods Trade 1901
Interviews with Baltimore business firms in early 1901 describe a year of heavy, sustained buying in canned goods. Packagers Booth & Co note low robber stocks after January inventories, leading to a May packing season with depleted small fruit lines and price rises of 10 to 50 percent by autumn. Demand expanded across New York, New England, the West, and the South, with shipments to the Middle West and Rocky Mountain heartland. Short crops elsewhere pushed tomato and overall prices up sharply.
