The engine tried to beat the horse to the crossing but the horse died instantly after being struck. Curtis lay thirty five feet from the collision. A three inch iron ring in a pocket bent nearly double while his watch stayed active. A stray quip about a humbug Sue Flodder and a painter named Sally sparked general chatter about manners and insult in a social party tale.
