Maryland 1944 tax law changes on dependents and credits
The Maryland Legislature enacted new 1944 tax rules affecting dependents. A dependent now must have gross income under 500 dollars, receive more than half support from the taxpayer, and be related within defined relations. Legal adopted children are treated as natural. Foreign citizens and distant relatives are excluded. The dependent credit for optional method drops from 440 to 400 dollars. Maryland also excludes up to 1500 dollars of military payments and muster-out pay from gross income for state residents. Special provisions waive returns and tax liability for residents who die while serving. Taxpayers are urged to note changes not on mailed forms.

Walk Through Teheran Courtyard Shops On Sunday Afternoon
A letter from Marion in Tran Tehouan dated October 16, 1914 describes a Sunday walk from Pehlevi Street to the Shah’s palace and a busy shopping district. He notes workshops making items from five gallon oil cans, colorful pottery and tile work, and scenes of daily life with Iranians, soldiers, and shopkeepers. The visit ends with tea at the Polish Red Cross in candlelight, reflecting war-torn Poland and the melancholy European atmosphere in Tehran.
