Hugo's Memory of Three Coup D Etat Episodes

The Revue Hebdomadaire prints a varied anecdote about Victor Hugo and Schoelcher before, during, and after Napoleon III's coup. Hugo recalls their tense rides in Paris and Brussels and the moment Schoelcher shouted Down with Caesar as a regiment passed. Hugo later highlights Schoelcher's fear and self restraint during those critical moments in Guernsey and at Hugo's home.

Captain John Smith and the First English Settlement

Captain John Smith of Willoughby Lincolnshire led the way to England’s first permanent North American settlement. At twenty six he had served in France the Low Countries and sought Turkish service. He survived being thrown overboard by a pirate and later earned arms after defeating three Turkish champions. He later escaped Turkish captivity and impressed a Turkish woman who aided his escape, as noted by Gardiner in London Outlook.

Animals at Play and the Joyful Illogic of Belief

The piece muses on how animals pretend and imitate conflict as play. A writer recalls a kitten and a dead mouse learned from a child’s game of make believe, showing curiosity, mischief, and careful sleuthing as the mouse shifts between slippers.

Why fashion clusters in the northwestern city quarters

The piece asserts a geographic pattern where fashion centers in the northwest of cities while wealth concentrates in the west end and poorer people in the south side. It argues prevailing northwesterly winds push dust smoke and odors toward the eastern or southern sides, making the opposite quarter more desirable for residence.
