Caroline county schools raised $939.89 for the 1948 March of Dimes, nearly doubling last year’s total. The report lists each school’s enrollment, total contributions, and the average per pupil, showing an average of 29.14 cents per pupil countywide.
A Cambridge meeting on February 10 set plans for Eastern Shore participation in a statewide rat elimination drive. Central Eastern Shore counties will implement the program during the week beginning March 1. Antu powder will be sold at local hardware and feed dealers. it is inexpensive. The government mix with tartar emetic may cause vomiting in nonrat animals. County agents who organized the effort will assist.
A Washingtons birthday celebration hosted by the North Eastern Shore District of the American Legion will be held at the Chestertown Armory on Monday February 23 1943 at 8 p m Members of Caroline Post No 29 will attend Major General Robert S Beightler renowned for service in the Mexican Campaign World War I and World War II will be the principal speaker He is now president of the Army Personnel Board and noted for his combat record including awards such as the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star This is the first time a military figure of his high rank will address the community
Fourteen clubs compete in the Dover Y M C A Invitational with games on consecutive Saturdays starting Feb 21 at the Dover Field House. First round features Smyrna vs Sadlerville, Delaware City vs Lewes, Harrington vs Play-Ten, Laurel vs Rehoboth Beach. more first-round matchups follow Feb 28 including Dover vs Fort Miles and Georgetown vs Denton.
Middletown moved into first in the Mar-Del Circuit after beating Smyrna 43 to 37 in overtime, ending Smyrna’s nine game streak. Rich Jones scored 25 for Middletown, Jim Ford had 14 for Smyrna, and Chestertown forfeited to Camden earlier affecting the standings. Milford beat Harrington 56 to 32 behind Lor Wilkins 14, Camden won 77 to 44 over Felton, and Denton edged Dover 28 to 27.
Federalsburg defeat 22 20 and Felton 42 37 as Denton Kittens improve to 13 wins against six losses. Smith 22 Cahall 13 lead scoring. Cahall perfect at the line. Horst adds 7 points on rebounds and defense. Welch and Detwiler out. Willis and Brubaker absent.
The Denton Baseball Club will hold a public meeting at Roy's Barber Shop on Friday evening at 8 p m February 27th to discuss plans for the coming season. All interested persons fans and players are urged to attend to help plan an eventful season.
1948 motor vehicle tag applications are mailed to passenger car owners statewide. Motor trucks and other types will follow as processed by the Department of Motor Vehicles. Tags issued this year use the same large tag with a small black insert bearing silver numerals 49. Current Maryland tags expire March 31.
The Town of Greensboro sold its 1948 45 000 refinancing and improvement bonds to Alex Brown and Sons of Baltimore at 3.1 percent with a 100 349 premium. Baker Watts and Co. of Bathmore bid 3 4 percent with a 100 072 premium. Funds support water sewer upgrades, pumps, artesian wells, and street system additions authorized by a 1947 legislature special session. Under Town Commissioners led by Russell H Wright improvements proceed, extending into adjacent areas.
Caroline Unit No. 29 of the American Legion Auxiliary voted to donate 11 to the Infantile Paralysis fund chapter in Caroline and 5 to the Heart Fund via Baltimore headquarters. The group also aids Red Cross Tag Day Child Welfare and veteran rehabilitation, with new members urged and eligibility via a member or veteran service.
The Easton Broadcasting Company, Inc. received a federal permit to build a 1000 watt AM station at 1480 kilocycles with calls WORM. Plans include three 170 foot towers, studios, and remote broadcasts across the Delmarva peninsula, with broad programming from religious and educational groups to public health campaigns.
The Denton Volunteer Fire Company annual drive, now in its second week, has raised 1389.00 from 243 donors toward a 5000.00 goal to cover the cost of a new pumper. Names of contributors span multiple towns including Denton Hillsboro Swarthmore Ridgely Harrington Seaford and Washington with area groups and businesses acknowledged.
Marvin E. Smith, a Denton attorney, will chair the annual Red Cross fund campaign for Caroline County Chapter starting March 1 with a $1,980 quota. Local chairmen and quotas: Denton Harry J. Scotten 30, Spurrsville Mrs. Harry A. Porter 15, Preston 205, Henderson 20. Mrs. Frederick P. Roe of Greensboro chairs the county chapter.
The Maryland and District of Columbia Soccer Association resumes Stewart Cup play with Batchelor facing Ridgely at Ridge ly on Sunday afternoon. Batchelor, a league winner with a 10 game unbeaten run, beat Glenn L. Martin Bombers 4 to 1 in the Stewart Cup and will meet Our Lady of Pompeii next. Queen Anne also fields a Shore League entry at Hancock, Md.
