The Lincoln Birthday Message on Rising From Humble Roots
The piece urges viewing Lincoln as proof that humble beginnings need not limit future achievement. It argues that many promising youths from poor homes could rise with more education and supportive funding, warnings that the nation loses potential when possibilities go unrealized.
Economic Highlights End of 1933 to Early 1934 Outlook
Economic report notes improved general business, stabilizing prices, and reduced inflation fears. It cites better domestic trade, slight employment drop offset by public works, stronger stock market yet speculative, steady foreign trade with rising dollar impact, construction rebound, freight traffic gains, and a strong early 1934 auto market with rising production. Auto industry shows strong demand.
Industrial outlook and 1933 sector performance summary
The report notes prices generally higher than last year with 15 of 17 producers showing increased operating schedules. It highlights 1933 as a weak year for Chemical Industries, but notes remaining high operations and positive signals for automobile and iron steel demand. Agriculture valued crops at 4.077 billion, up 43 percent from 1932 due to price increases despite 18 percent lower production. Wheat and cotton receipts improved mid January. Lumber orders bottomed in December with a mid January recovery and rising prices. Steel output rose in December and early January to 34 percent capacity with price gains. Textiles suffered a heavy year end decline, one of the few industries with a further seasonal drop.

League code debate and European diplomacy notes
The issue of prolonging the League trusteeship is debated amid fears of intruding on German politics and fanning hostility. Reports cite Hawley Wilbur praising a business code as a tool for ethical profits, while others warn about middlemen in lumber and shifting government rules through the NRA. A nonaggression pact between Germany and Poland is noted, and Friends of Europe aims to explain Germany to prevent war while Spain is highlighted for its debt and political harmony. A letter to the paper complains about Maryland farm taxes and university guidance, urging fiscal restraint and farmer interests amid drought and price collapse.
