Byrne Nomination to U S Attorney Reported Adverse

The United States Judiciary Committee voted 9 to 4 to report adversely the nomination of William Michael Byrne for United States Attorney for Delaware. The nomination, sent by the President, follows Byrne resigning as Delaware District Attorney to seek a House seat, amid protests by the Delaware Bar Association alleging neglect of duties. The fight moves to the Senate in executive session with Mr. McComas leading the opposition.

Thirteenth Confederate Veterans Banquet in New York

At the Waldorf Astoria the Confederates Veteran Camp held its thirteenth annual banquet with eloquent eulogies to Lee and Lincoln and Jefferson Davis. Speakers included Charles Frances Adams and Henry Watterson, with William Hepburn Russell responding for Davis. Over 600 comrades and many guests attended, with notable women present. Anthracite derives from a Greek meaning precious stone.
