County Agent Urges Fertilizing Pastures For Better Spring Yields

The county agent explains that applying fertilizer to pastures this month pays off in spring with longer lasting, more succulent pasture. A mix of ladino clover and orchard grass yields about 5000 pounds of 4 percent milk per acre. Typical top dressings range from 350 to 500 pounds per acre of 5-10-10, 4-12-12, or 5-15-15 fertilizer, with adjustments based on clover content. New pasture stands should be seeded this spring, often in small grains, using conventional drills or broadcast seeding. Orchard grass seeds are larger and require careful placement. ladino clover seeds should be seeded separately for best results. A suggested mix includes ladino clover, orchard grass, red clover or alfalfa, and lespedera, with limits on lespedera and orchard grass to maintain balance. A separate note covers a February 16 corn and soybean meeting at Denton Fire Hall with University of Maryland extension speakers and local farmer panels.
