County officials reject Maryland World's Fair fund plan

Caroline County Commissioners oppose a proposed state exhibit fund for the 1939 New York World's Fair. Letters from Emanuel Gorfine and Warren King urged a $1,000 county contribution toward a $50,000 Maryland exhibit, but board president J. Frank Lane said a levy would be unfair and the plan lacks local support.

Gordy Enters Maryland Governor Race as Democrat

William S. Gordy Jr., longtime Maryland comptroller, launches a bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination from the Emerson Hotel. He vows a single term, appeals for honesty, state institution reform, highway development, and closer state local cooperation while opposing gas tax diversion. Gordy, 64, of Salisbury, has led Salisbury National Bank and heads local hospital and elder home efforts. He is married to M Clara White with no children.

Work On 1938 Conservation To Start Soon

Educational work on the 1938 conservation program in Maryland counties will begin soon, per Dr. T. B. Symons. Modifications from pending farm bill may affect details but not core features. Farmers will learn total payment, soil depleting and soil building goals, with two farm groups and special potato and orchard provisions.

Smoky Joe Returns to Bay Run as Rescue Vessel

The Chesapeake Bay tug known as Smoky Joe has resumed service between Light Street Wharf and Love Point, Baltimore. Renowned for heroism, she rescued passengers from the City of Baltimore liner and the Beacon tanker in July 1932, and during the 1984 bay ice crisis she led ice-breaking trips with remarkable independence.

Sanitation Drive Aims for Caroline County Privies
