Odd mineral mined only in Utah halts in ash black form

Gilsonite, an odd, asphaltetic mineral unique to Utah, is used in varnish, paint, insulation and ink. Discovered in Ashley Valley after 1878 settlement, it burned with dense black smoke and a tarlike melt rather than ash. Theories cite formation from a synclinal basin and heat distilling oils from carbonaceous sandstone in Uintah and Green River shales.
