Whip Crips Attracts Complaints From Mills and South
In Washington about one third of congress gathered for Christmas gifts by Speaker Crisp. Mills supporters protest small favors and the north’s control of key committees while the south feels snubbed. Senate and House proceedings feature Democrat chairmanships on private claims and other panels, with West resuming the transportation of smelt products committee. New chairs include Proctor Shoup Pettigrew and Allen. Executive actions confirm Elkins as secretary of war and Nebeker, Brooks, and others to federal posts. House columnists note Fitzgerald’s column committee appointments and Meredith taking oath as Virginia’s new representative. Both houses adjourn to January 5.
