Famous English chemist Victimized by Quack Healed by Cure Belief
The great English chemist Joseph Priestly, discoverer of oxygen, was deceived around 1795 by a quack who claimed to cure his daughter Sarah of tuberculosis. Priestly, lacking loved ones in peril, allowed her to endure a six month confinement in a cowhouse with minimal furnishings while the quack promoted his program. Despite the harsh conditions and dubious method, Sarah survived. The National Tuberculosis Association notes such quackery was common before cures were understood. Today, 2,084 affiliated tuberculosis associations funded by Christmas Seals spread knowledge that no medicine cures TB, only rest, fresh air, sunshine, good food, and a reputable physician.
