Morse Earle notes the colonial custom of perambulating boundaries called beating the bounds. Boys earned a willow wand with small yarn ties used to mark lines while walking the bounds, a practice remembered with memory and discipline. Pepys records mention of whipping along boundaries in 1601.

The new formulation mixes potassium chlorite and antimony sulfide, neither explosive, and uses a tin strip with a varnish of gum lacquer containing ground red phosphorus for ignition by friction against the charge.
A London bookseller cites a rare first book by Brawling as valuable at 2200 dollars. The work, printed in TAS with help from the poet’s aunt Mrs. Silver Thorne, survives in few copies and is described as the Indeulate.
