Open Letter Praising Preston School Fire Response

Principal William Murdoch thanks Preston School faculty students and community for unity and support after the fire. Firefighters from Preston Easton and Federalsburg battled the blaze from 2 a.m. to daybreak and plans to resume schooling were helped by board of education county staff and nearby communities.

Christmas Services In Church Of The Brethren

The Denton Church of the Brethren sets a Christmas program with an 11:00 a.m. organ prelude and readings by Kenneth Shaffer Jr and others, a 7:00 p.m. musical presentation led by Merle Knotts and Miss Phyllis Leese, plus a sermon by Pastor Galen Blough titled A Trip to Bethlehem. Public invited.

NASCAR Champs Get Invitation For Daytona Race

NASCAR champs from nine states earned invitations to the 250 mile modified sportsman race at Daytona Beach on Feb 13 1960. The list includes 30 drivers with home towns and tracks where they won 1959 titles across Airborne Park Speedway Stafford Springs Winchester and other venues.

Christ Church Welcomes New Rector This Sunday

Christ Church on Denton's Court House Green invites The Rt. Rev. Dr. Allen J. Miller on Sunday at 11 AM to institute The Rev. B. DeFrees Brien as Rector of St. Mary's White Chapel Parish. Wardens Butler and Vandegrift host, Bishop Miller reads the charge, and parish keys are presented. Special music by Christ Church Choir. A 7 PM Christmas party for children follows. A Holy Eucharist is planned Thursday at 10 AM with sacrament reserved for the sick and Prayer Group visits.

Peoples Bank Increases Stock Dividend By 9%

The Peoples Bank of Denton announced at its Tuesday meeting on Dec 8 1959 an extra 9 percent dividend in addition to the regular 3 percent. Stockholders of record as of Dec 15 1959 will receive this year end 12 percent plus a mid year 6 percent for a total of 18 percent on par value, the highest declared.

State Trooper Activity During The Past Week

The State Police report details several incidents from the past week in Maryland. Incidents include a multi-vehicle collision near Deep Branch road southwest of Denton with injuries and charges for Trice Cain and Murray. A second crash on State route 328 near the Chicken Plant resulted in a speeding violation. A third incident involved Naomi Cornish being injured then released after a ride with James Henry Wilson. Leon Sylvester Hunt was stabbed while intervening in a fight at the Hitching Rail and treated at Memorial Hospital Easton. A racial note states all involved in the accidents were colored. Maryland and Delaware authorities detained Reese Mumford and George Jones, both white, for questioning over multiple burglaries and larcenies across several counties. Detainers with Delaware are in place awaiting trial.

Juvenile Delinquency Help Sought in Caroline County

A county article says there is no real juvenile delinquency problem in Caroline County yet, but several troubled youths exist. Agencies seek time and private foster homes to keep a white boy of about fifteen from an institution, with support from Health Department official Dr. Edwin G. Riley. Families willing to help should contact him in Denton.

VFW Children’s Christmas Party Planned Sunday

The Caroline Memorial Post 7937 Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a Christmas party for children twelve and under on the Denton Greensboro road Sunday at 2 PM. Movies will be shown and Santa will give a treat to each attendee.

Kermit Overby of the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association spoke to 36 Eastern Shore community leaders at Choptank Electric Cooperative headquarters about REA loan rates. He defended current policy, warned against rate hikes that threaten co op survival, and noted rural electrification progress and upcoming Assateague Island line energization.

Rev Meacham to Address Denton Rotary Christmas Program

The Rev Mr C H Meacham a Unitarian minister from Anne Arundel County will speak at the Denton Rotary Christmas program on Tuesday Dec 22. Meacham who arrived in Annapolis last July previously served Unitarian parishes in Nantucket Island and Athol MA He is a Harvard Divinity School graduate class of 1954 born in the St Lawrence Valley NY state and educated at Atlantic Union College He spoke via tape to the Denton club on Dec 15 from a Denton England club and a two minute film from the Cricknic event accompanied the session as part of an international friendship effort.

Christmas Candlelight Service At First Church

First Methodist Church Denton will host a Candlelight Carol Service on Sunday at 7 30 pm. The service features Christmas meditations scripture stories poetry and special music directed by Mrs Dorothy W Rue with solos by R Dale Palmer and Mrs Morgan Williams. Caroline County Medical Society Elects Officers at Brick Hotel

The Caroline County Medical Society elected Dr. Henry Trapnell as president at its Dec 10 meeting in Denton. Officers include Dr. Edwin Riley as VP and Dr. Charles H. Winnacott as secretary treasurer. Delegates to the State Convention are Dr. Harold Plummer and Dr. Robert Wright as alternate. The group opposed the Forand bill and plans an January 1960 dinner at the Brick Hotel. Committee chairs were Daw son George for dinners, E Paul Knotts for speaker arrangements, and William E. Lennon for fellowship.

Meiss Named Chairman of March of Dimes Drive

Clarence Meiss a Caroline County teacher is named county chairman for the March of Dimes campaign to support polio research and new disease areas such as arthritis and birth defects.
