Farm Woman Is U.S. Canning Champion
Caroline County housewives and entries in the National Canning Contest drew national interest as winners were announced in Chicago. Grand champion Mary Houss of Kenan Wis. won 1250 dollars. first prizes went to Mrs Dudley Brooks Roba Red Ala and Miss Margery Drew Athol Mass. A total of 5825 dollars went to 208 winners from over 25 000 entrants. Mrs Hvass plans to stock the farm with Holstein cows using her 1250 prize. The contest notes a shift from open kettle to steam pressure canning, with 75 percent of prize jars made by pressure canning.
