The Michigan Road Route and Early Surveys

An account by Albert C. Rose on the Michigan Road detailing survey efforts in Indiana from 1827 to 1830. It covers Knight’s Indianapolis survey, the Lake Michigan terminus at Michigan City, choices between routes across Kankakee swamps and via South Bend, legislative approvals in 1838, and the Madison to Greensburg segment begun in 1830 under Hanna Polke and McLelland with surveyor Thomas Reaugh.

Michigan Road Contract and Land Selections in 1830s Indiana

Noah Noble directs southern road lands as Congress delays contiguous section approval. State funds 60,000 for the National Road near Indianapolis while fur trade wanes. Michigan Road work divides into three sections with overseers Kelso Bassett and Polke, opening to Logansport and North. Steamboat era arrival near White River ignites civic pride, then contracts spread, rights of way cleared, and grading advances to finish 267 miles by mid-1832.
