Bullet in Brain 41 Days Woman Dies After Gunshot

Philadelphia report: Mrs. Louise Miller, shot by her husband Samuel on July 16, lingered 41 days with a bullet in her head before dying at West Philadelphia Homeopathic Hospital. Surgeons removed bone splinters and efforts to save her life continued as the case claimed a third fatality.

Butler shoots widow after quarrel in St. Louis

Germany tightens mobilization as youth drafted

London reports from the official press bureau that Germany will fight until its army is crushed and resources are exhausted. An order through newspapers requires all boys aged 16 to 19 to undergo military training. Germany has already called up its last regular reserves, including men past typical service ages.

Last all water voyage to New York via Panama Canal ends

The Pleades of Luckenbach Steamship Company completed the final all water voyage from San Francisco to New York by way of the Panama Canal. The ship, flying the American flag, sailed from San Francisco on July 24 and passed through the canal on August 11.

Philadelphia reports an official dispatch via Dr. Albert Murda asserting Allied losses of about 70,000 killed wounded missing and captured. German losses said similar. Dispatch claims German army victorious along the front with English forces flanked and channel retreat cut off. Namur reportedly fallen and Austrian and Russian fronts noted.

Long Session for Congress Ad journment Likely After Nov 1

Administration leaders expect no adjournment before November 1 and doubt a recess until the next session opens in December. Senator Kern of Indiana says Congress may not leave Washington until then as war needs and trust legislation require work.

Chicago hogs and cattle prices show varied demand with bulk sales near 8.85 to 9.20 for hogs, rough 8.50 to 8.70 range, cattle beeves 6.15 to 10.60, steers 6.30 to 9.40, stockers and feeders 5.10 to 8.10, cows and heifers 3.60 to 9.70, calves 7.76 to 10.75, and sheep 5.10 to 6.05 with yearlings at 6.70 and lambs 6.50 to 8.50.
