Peach Growers Battle Low Prices and Market Reform

Local peach growers face low market prices despite a year with scarce fruit and rising costs. Calls focus on finding true causes, boosting home packing capacity, and building more distributive options to secure fair returns and sustain grower earnings. Farm groups urge examining supply, costs, and potential railway improvements to unlock profits.

Marydel Canning Industry Sees Mixed Yields and Growth

The Marydel area reports peach crops waning while tomatoes rise with cannery activity. At Slemmer's cannery two tons of corn and 650 baskets of tomatoes produced in half a day, with 660 more baskets in the afternoon. Peach packing reaches 3500 cases as string beans and a large quantity of tomatoes await processing. The tin plate tariff under McKinley marginally affects costs, with a 34% cent per dozen cans impact, and a future price rise anticipated once tin supply depletes. Sugar costs fall this year, softening canned goods prices, but next year calls for price cuts on vegetables and fruit to keep canning profitable. The town's growth, enterprise, and morality are praised, with the Democratic Club meeting September 11 in Henderson for addresses by Dr. Tolson and others. The M E church festival last week was a success, while Herr Toelker is ill under Dr Tolson's care with the Toelker family visiting. Tomatoes this season may exceed 40,000 baskets, and the area sees its largest ever acreage. Peach buyers Hubbard and Harrington have returned home briefly. Misses Kate Woodall and Jennie Smith visit the Green family, and Col. Downes visited Saturday.
