Denton raids flood jail as liquor crackdown hits county
Caroline County launches its largest postwar enforcement effort against illegal beer wine and whiskey selling. In a rapid series of dawn raids twenty suspects were arrested alongside about 450 quarts of liquor, overwhelming the Denton jail. The operation led by State tax chief Robert N Locke involved federal state and local officers and focused on Negro peddlers who served migratory farm workers. Authorities said drinks must be sold only through county dispensaries with taverns allowed beer but not wine or whiskey. The raid began behind a Denton garage with teams converging to cover targets before news spread. The first arrest at Elias Easy Jones residence yielded no proprietor but later Jones was captured near Black Cat Del. and fingerprinted.
