Canneries idle as blight hits tomato harvest area

A Kent and Caroline county region farmer reports 1898 tomato yields of 700 baskets per acre last season dropping to at most 100 baskets per acre this year due to blight. Around 12 to 14 large canneries have little to do, except one plant receiving product from others for about an hour of work each day, forecasting widespread unemployment. Miss Mabel Smith, a former teacher from Cape Charles Va, stayed at the camp renewing acquaintances before returning home. An item notes a correction: Mr G. Loockerman did not break his collar bone but dislocated his shoulder. Todd and Govey, 90-year-old locals, attended camp. Todd’s cannery began tomato work last Wednesday.
