Duchess of Ru land in London Queen laments the drift away from long crape and woolen mourning as too showy. She argues for simple black and private sorrow, noting the shifting social norms around widow attire and public displays of grief.
The church of St Nicholas in Newcastle upon Tyne has gained cathedral status with the Newcastle bishopric but is renowned for its external beauty. Its beaming lantern spire and pinnacles crown a grand tower, admired by travelers from London to Edinburgh via the Great Northern and North British railways. A 1873 to 1876 interior restoration under Sir G Gilbert Scott enhanced its decor, making it worthy of cathedral dignity on a rock overlooking the river and bustling town.

A late alarm prompts fear of a Federal advance, but the raid proves to be a false alarm attributed to the presence of Uncle Rad. The tale ends with his boast that he helped save the boys from a hard fight. In a separate vignette a Lancashire audience and Sir Joseph Lee tease Mr Chamberlain about identifying Mrs Chamberlain, who rises to bow.

The piece lauds rich donors backing education and ends with a moral from scripture urging self examination and personal achievement.
