A group of leading colored men urge white trustees to run colored schools, arguing most colored trustees are illiterate. They note teachers are hired by separate trustees and disputes arise on opening day. Patrons urge the School Board to adopt new appointment methods to avoid placing schools in the hands of those who cannot read or discriminate in teacher quality.

A 19th century letter from S. F. Andrews urges church members not to separate from their Christian community. He recalls his long service as a class leader, extols the Patton and Willis families, and warns that division harms love, creates judgment and strife, and weakens the social moral fabric.
