Governor Bets State Funds To Hire Maryland Farm Labor

Governor Herbert R. O Conor proposes up to 5000 for transporting farm workers from the South to Maryland Eastern Shore. He offered to pay half the cost with counties matching, to meet a 4000-worker harvest need for vegetables fruits and berries. The plan, discussed at Annapolis with federal and Farm Bureau officials, hinges on county contributions and federal job placement support.

Maryland June traffic fatalities drop to record low

In June Maryland recorded 28 traffic fatalities, the lowest June figure in years, amid a national emergency that helped curb accidents. There were 1411 accidents and 705 injuries, marking large declines from last year: 47.1 percent fewer fatalities, 22.6 percent fewer total accidents, and 20.8 percent fewer injuries. The biggest drop was 71.4 percent in fixed object non-collision crashes, followed by 55.5 percent in two vehicle collisions and 33.3 percent in other categories.

The Minute Men from Caroline County were inducted into the Maryland State Militia on Friday July 24 at the Denton Armory. The 107 officers and men are under Captain George Clendaniel with Colonel Wallace Williams leading the 5th Battalion Area.

Wesley Junior College Opens Fall Term

The Wesley Junior College in Delaware's capital reopens September 19 as Wesley Junior College after renovations. Dr A J Jackson says only freshmen this year with sophomores added next year. about 40 enrolled of a 60 cap. Founded 1873 as Wilmington Conference Academy with a storied history and notable alumni.

Empty Tanker Topples Chesapeake City Bridge In Canal

An empty oil tanker crashed into the Chesapeake City lift bridge on the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal at 11:30 am Tuesday, toppling the southern tower and leaving the bow wedged under the span. Army engineers and FBI joined salvage efforts, with no serious injuries reported. The incident halted canal traffic and prompted evaluations of prior vessel damage and bridge design.

Weather And Crop Conditions This Week In Maryland

Weather this week was mostly cloudy with variable temperatures and scattered showers. Rain totals include 1.03 inches in Baltimore and 2.41 inches in Chewsville, with Keedysville month-to-date at 5.23 inches. Crops are mostly good to excellent. pastures vary from good to excellent in the north to fair to good in central and southern counties. Harvesting continues for barley, wheat, rye, oats, corn, potatoes, and fruits with yields ranging from fair to heavy in hay and several crops.
