Testing Seed Corn for Spring Planting
Farmers are urged to test seed corn before planting to avoid weak stalks and poorer yields. The U S Department of Agriculture recommends germination tests ear by ear, sampling kernels from top middle and butt, and discarding ears with weak sprouts. If germination reaches 97 percent across many ears the seed supply is likely satisfactory, but testing each ear remains safest.
